PCOS (polycystic ovaries syndrome) also known as Hyperandrogenic Anovulation (HA) is the most common hormonal disorder among women of reproductive age. It is called a ‘Silent Killer’ as the symptoms of the same are generally unrelated to each other. Infertility is one of the most common results of this syndrome. With the wedding season round the corner, it is a must for a woman to get herself checked for the same.
The symptoms of PCOS may vary from person to person. The symptoms include: irregular or missing menstrual cycle, unwanted or excess facial hair growth, infertility, weight gain, and skin problems like skin tags, skin darkening and acne.
Along with these symptoms some women may face further complications like diabetes (type 2), uterine cancer, heart and blood vessel problems or sleep apnea. The cause of PCOS is unknown but it maybe environmental or genetic or both.
PCOS treatments may include birth control pills for regular menstruation, metformin to regulate the insulin levels, or even surgery. Exercise and weight loss help a lot but the disorder itself makes it difficult to lose weight. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and regular exercise may help in prevention of the same. Women facing any of the above symptoms should not take it lightly and should visit their gynaecologist immediately.
