Menorrhagia is the medical term for abnormally heavy or prolonged periods. A heavy flow before the menopause does not account for such a condition but if during a period you are unable to lead your life and daily activities, you should consult a doctor. The major symptoms of this condition are prolonged menstruation (more than a week), heavy bleeding to the extent of changing a sanitary napkin every hour for several hours consecutively, passing of blood clots along with the flow, anemia, tiredness and fatigue. Irregular vaginal bleeding or bleeding after menopause may also be a symptom. There are various causes for this condition to occur such as hormone imbalance, dysfunction of the ovaries, uterine fibroids, polyps, pregnancy complications etc. It is caused when bleeding happens without ovulation. This condition, if unattended to, can cause iron deficiency amnesia and also it causes severe pain. The treatment for such condition may include iron supplements, oral contraceptives, oral progesterone, tranexamic acid and non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
